Not sure what size storage shed you need or if you even need one at all? The first step in answering this question is to sort through all of your things. You’ll have to make some tough decisions on what to keep and what to toss. Don’t worry; we’re here to help!
There’s a good chance you’ve been holding on to stuff from decades ago – things that you no longer want or need. Let’s start with that windbreaker suit you wore in the late 80s and early 90s. This style just isn’t coming back. (Even if it were to return, do you really want to be the 70-year-old man/woman sporting a fluorescent jogging suit?)
Some things will be easier to toss than others. For the tougher items, ask yourself these questions:
- When is the last time I used this item, and will I need it in the near future?
If it’s been years since you’ve used this item, it’s time to let go. Furthermore, if you don’t foresee yourself needing this thing in the near future, you probably won’t use it again anyway.
- Do I have another object that serves the same purpose?
If so, keep the item that’s in better condition and get rid of the other.
- Is this item broken or in need of repair?
If so, will you devote the time and money to fixing it? (Answer honestly.) If your answer is “no,” toss the item or give it to someone who will care for it.
- Is this thing perishable, and has it passed its expiration date?
If so, this answer is easy: throw it away!
- Does this object hold a true sentimental value?
If you have a significant emotional attachment to an item, keep it.
- Would someone else get more use out of this item than I am?
If so, consider selling or donating it.
- Will this item help me lead a better, happier life?
This is the ultimate question and possibly the hardest. Take time to think on it. If, deep down, you realize the answer is “no,” donate, sell, or toss the item.
As you answer the questions above, sort your belongings into the following categories: keep, sell, donate, and toss. Then…do just that!
A lot of times, your “keep” pile will still be the largest of all. For that reason, you may find yourself needing extra space to store all of those things. (You’ve gone through this much work, so you might as well put things back in an organized fashion, right?)
