The Fall Gardener’s Ultimate Planting List

Fall Gardening

Spring and Summer are a gardener’s time to shine. The warm weather makes it easy to spend hours and hours working out in your garden, enjoying the sunlight, and producing beautiful flowers, herbs and healthy veggies.

But colder weather doesn’t mean those gardening tasks have to come to an end. There are plenty of important fall gardening tasks to prepare for the winter cold, dreary weather.

If you don’t have a Garden Shed to help with these gardening tasks year-round, it could be time to invest in a durable, appealing Cook Garden Shed. Here are 4 reasons a Garden Shed from Cook Portable Warehouses is the right choice for you!

  1. For storing lawn and garden equipment, everything a gardener needs from hand tools to larger equipment like wheelbarrows and other essentials like hoses.

  1. For the convenient workspace that every gardener needs. It provides the room you need to add shelving, workbenches and other smart storage solutions.

  1. For shelter from the outside conditions like blazing sun and rain showers. So, gardeners can work through hot, cold, rainy and snowy days.

  1. For a greenhouse space for growing starter plants that aren’t ready for the harsh outside conditions.

Here are some recommendations of tasks to get done or items to get planted by the end of October to best prepare your garden to sustain itself through the winter and be ready to start blooming again this spring. These three tips come from Plants Plus. You can read more details about their advice here.

Fall Gardener’s To-Do List

  1. Remove all weeds and debris from any soil you won’t be using over the winter. Then, gently till the soil and expose any existing insects. After the soil is exposed, add a thin layer of compost and leaves (in the fall, we all have plenty of those in our yard)!  Complete the process, by tilling the top layer of soil. This will greatly reduce future pest troubles next spring and summer.
  1. Take time to pull up all bean, pea, tomato, and squash plants, along with the stakes. If the plants are disease-free, you can compost them. If any are diseased, either discard separately or burn them.
  1. You can leave radishes, turnips, carrots, horseradish, leeks, and parsnips in your garden through early winter. Just make sure to cover them with a heavy layer of mulch. Then, mark the rows with tall stakes, so these plants are easy to find in the snow or other tough wintertime conditions.

What to Plant Before Winter

Garlic

Although garlic can be planted in early spring, fall planting is recommended by most seasoned gardeners. If you plant in the fall, the bulbs will be larger and more flavorful when they are harvested. Read more here!

Lettuce

Garden lettuce is best planted in both spring and fall. Although lettuce seedlings do best in temperatures between 45 and 65 degrees. So, if temperatures are below freezing or frost is setting in, it’s time to harvest. Try planting small amount and stagger your plantings to ensure the best quality. Learn more here!
