Whether you’re storing items in a shed, an attic, a basement, or a garage, there are certain tips and tricks to keep in mind.

  1. Dispose of Unwanted Materials

There are some possessions that either have sentimental value or could be useful somewhere down the road. Then, there are items that we’ll probably never use again. Why hang on to this stuff? While it’s easy to push these things aside and forget about them, you’re only creating problems for yourself in the long run.

First of all, valuable storage space is being wasted on unnecessary items. Secondly, the more stuff you have, the longer it takes to dig through and find whatever you’re actually searching for.

  1. Organize Before Storing

The key to any good storage plan is organization. Begin by grouping like items together. Garden tools over here, holiday decorations over there, cleaning supplies in that corner, etc. Now, you’ll have a better idea of where things can fit in the space you have and which size storage containers you’ll need.

  1. Use Clear Plastic Containers

Plastic containers are great for a few reasons. They’re clear, so it’s easy to see which things you’ve stored in each bin. That will shave some time off of your searching later on. These containers are also better than cardboard boxes at keeping out pests and moisture. Finally, plastic containers are usually made for stacking, so that Leaning Tower of Packages won’t be an issue anymore.

  1. Don’t Overpack Containers

People typically want to cram as much as they can into one container. This can be dangerous for your possessions. Bulging containers may be difficult to stack and could leave entry points for unwanted critters. Additionally, you put your stuff at risk of being broken.

  1. Be Mindful of Breakable Items

Glassware and other fragile items should be carefully wrapped in bubble wrap or packing paper and stored together in designated containers. Be sure to clearly mark these containers as “FRAGILE” so that you remember to take extra care with them.

  1. Label Everything

If you’re taking the time to organize things now, you might as well go ahead and label everything, too. This step won’t take long at all and will save you a lot of time and hassle in the end.  When everything has a place, it’s easier to stay organized. Plus, you’ll be able to find things quicker when you come back to them!

  1. Utilize Shelving

While plastic containers are great for stacking, sometimes shelves just come in handy. Let’s say you’ve got a lot of containers piled up, and the thing you want is located at the bottom of that stack. Rather shelving units also help to elevate your things, getting them off the floor and away from possible harm.
