People choose to store a wide range of items in their portable sheds. You may be remodeling or perhaps you have returning college students. Oftentimes, this storage list includes couches, tables, and other furniture. The important thing to remember is that such items usually call for protective measures.

Without proper planning, accidents can happen. Glass may be broken, furniture scratched, and rodents may decide to inhabit your favorite armchair.

Help prevent such instances from occurring by following these steps to prepare furniture for storage!

Prepare Packing Materials

First, you’ll want to gather up all the essential packing materials. The list of supplies may include: bubble wrap, rolls of foam packaging, plastic furniture covers, storage bags, cardboard sheets, and packing tape.

Clean Everything

Begin by cleaning the furniture you plan to store. Wipe off any dust and debris that has settled on these possessions. Such elements can actually scratch your furniture in the moving process.

If you haven’t already, now is also the time to try removing stains from couch cushions and similar surfaces. You’ll thank yourself when it comes time to unpack these items later!

Break It Down

To save space and make storing furniture easier, disassemble whatever items you can.

For instance, we recommend taking the legs off of tables and dismantling entertainment centers. If you’re unsure how to disassemble a piece of furniture, consult the owner’s manual.

Then, place both the owner’s manual and any small parts (screws, end caps, Allen wrenches, etc.) into a small resealable storage bag. Keep this bag with its respective piece of furniture.

Carefully Wrap (most important step!)

This may be the most important step in the process. The way your furniture is wrapped can play a huge role in its safety.

Couches, recliners, mattresses, and other similar items should be wrapped in plastic sheeting or furniture covers. Ensure there are no entry points for rodents and other critters.

To help prevent scratching, place a layer of cardboard between metal or wooden pieces that may be touching. Glass, metal, and wooden pieces should also be carefully encased with bubble wrap.

Now, grab your plastic bag of extra parts from Step 3. Using duct tape, attach the bag to the outside wrapping of its respective furniture.

Plan Your Moves Wisely

If you’ve ever played a game of Tetris, you know how important it is to plan ahead. Otherwise, you end up putting the T-shaped piece in the L-shaped slot. Then, you’re left with wasted space.

You also don’t want to place something heavy where it could fall on something breakable.

Look at the space you have available and the items you need to store. Then, create a plan for how these pieces will best fit together. Find a way to make the most of your storage space while ensuring the protection of your belongings.
