What is Minimalism? A Solution for Your Overcrowded Life


Do you ever feel overwhelmed by everything around you? Your work life, social life, and family life are just too much to balance. It doesn’t help that you come home to a house filled wall to wall with stuff. This isn’t to say you’re anywhere near the “hoarder” level; maybe you just went a little overboard when it came to decorating. We understand.

While we can’t provide any quick and easy solutions for balancing your busy life, we will offer a little home improvement advice. Sometimes, that can be just enough. The environment in which you live has a direct impact on your mood, how you perceive things around you, and how you interact with others.

What is Minimalism?

Contemporary style is all about simplicity. Less is more. Therefore, it’s no surprise that minimalism has become such a hit! What is minimalism, though?

Minimalism is more than just a decorating technique; it’s a lifestyle. Minimalists strive to lead a relatively simple life.  It’s about eliminating the excess in favor of the essentials. Sound familiar? We often discuss the importance of removing clutter from your home.

Does “simple life” mean that you should get rid of your car, electronics, and other modern-day conveniences? No. Minimalism shouldn’t be a scary thing. Choose the degree that best fits your needs.  For now, let’s just start with your home.

How to Implement Minimalism in Your Life

  1. Establish an End Goal

Search through home magazines and Google Images to find your ideal style of home décor. Feel free to pick and choose elements of different images. Once you’ve done this, you’ll have a clear vision in mind.

  1. Make Up Your Mind

You’ve got to decide to be fully committed to this new look.  That means accepting whatever challenges may come with it.  It’s not easy to let go of some possessions, but remember that it’s just stuff.

  1. Define the Essentials

You know you probably won’t be able to keep everything, so you’ve got to decide what is really important to you.  Here’s one way to think about it.  Imagine that you come home one day, and everything is gone. The house is completely empty. The only way your possessions will be returned is if you can remember them.

This is trickier than it sounds. Give it a try. Name everything in your living room right now. In your bedroom?  In your guest room?

Chances are that you forgot more than a few things. In this case, you would know that those things can be eliminated or at least stored elsewhere.

  1. Stow Stuff Away

Letting go of your things can almost feel like abruptly quitting an addiction (or going “cold turkey”). Make it easier on yourself by finding a separate place to store the non-essentials. You may want to consider a backyard shed or portable warehouse, for instance. You’ll feel more relaxed and in control, knowing that your stuff is just a few short strides away, should you ever need it. Eventually, though, you’ll forget all about these possessions. It’s the whole “out of sight, out of mind” situation.

  1. Eliminate the Rest

Be honest with yourself. There are plenty of things in your home that you no longer use or need. Donate those things to charity, sell them, or even toss them in the trash.


Going minimalist is not the easiest task; it takes time and commitment. In the end, though, many people discover minimalism has helped them lead happier, less stressful lives. Try it out for yourself!
