Moving homes can be not only a stressful day but a stressful few months until you’re settled. This task is made even more difficult when you’re not fully prepared. That’s why we’ve assembled these 7 helpful moving tips seen below!

  1. Reinforce Your Boxes

You don’t want to get entirely packed only to have the bottom of your boxes break. This will create a mess and deflate your sense of accomplishment. Be sure to duct tape the seams of your boxes before packing.  It’s better to be safe than sorry!

  1. Don’t Overfill Boxes

It’s also important not to overfill your boxes. Just because you can fit 30 hardback books in a container doesn’t mean you should. Think ahead. When it comes to loading and unloading these boxes, will you be able to lift them?

  1. Pack by Room

Rather than mixing and matching items from all over the house, keep items segmented by room. This will make it easier when it’s time to unpack in your new home. You’ll already know where everything goes.

  1. Gather Like Items Together

Go even further by organizing like items into boxes. This will end up saving you time and frustration in the long run.

  1. Keep the Necessities Separate

It’s late and you’ve just finished moving boxes into your new place. You simply want to go to bed, but your toothbrush, pajamas, and other nighttime necessities are stored in different boxes. Keep your frustrations down by packing these daily necessities separate. Don’t forget things like toilet paper, paper towels, a few cleaning supplies, paper plates, etc. Just things you might need to get through the first few days while you’re still locating and unpacking all of your boxes.

  1. Protect Fragile Pieces

This one should probably go without saying. When moving, be sure to keep breakable items separate from everything else. You’ll also want to wrap these pieces in bubble wrap, newspaper or even old towels/rags. Pack fragile items tightly enough that they won’t be easily jostled during the move. Plus, think about protecting the door frames and floors of your new place. As you begin moving in, you’re bound to get a few nicks here and there, so add old rugs to the floor or throw them around furniture as you’re moving it into home.

  1. Label Everything

You should always have a permanent marker on hand when packing. Label each of your boxes. The more detailed your descriptions are, the better it will be for you later.

According to this survey, Americans will move approximately 11.7 times in their lives. That’s incredible!  Over your lifetime, you’re bound to accumulate more and more stuff, making each move that much harder. Consider purchasing a portable storage shed.
