The time for gardening, sports and outdoor fun is almost here. So, spend the last days of winter preparing and dreaming of the fun ahead.

Begin by cleaning out and organizing your shed. That way, when the warmer weather arrives, you aren’t fishing through clutter to find a deflated soccer ball. Instead, you’re ready to enjoy a game with the family.

So, here are 3 steps to prepare your shed for Spring:

Clean up your shed space

Take everything out to ensure every corner gets clean. Sweep out the dirt and tear down cobwebs that have built up. Then, use your water hose to spray down the inside and outside of your shed.

When you begin planning your outdoor parties you’ll want your lawn furniture to be looking like new. Take the furniture out, touch up the paint and wash the seat cushions and pillows. To ensure no mold or mildew remains, be sure to clean those items on a hot setting. 

Mold and mildew could be a new addition to your lawn chairs. To get rid of this, use a vinegar mixture. Spray the area with this mixture and use a bristle brush to clean it.   

Get organized

While everything is out, categorize your items.  Remember to examine your things and ask yourself a few questions like:

• Do I need this?
• Have I used this in the past year?
• Does it hold any sentimental value to anyone in my family?
• Will anyone be upset if they discover this in the trash?
• If I donated it, could it be used by someone else safely?
• Can I fix or clean this up? Is it time to buy a replacement?

Organizing doesn’t always need to equal getting rid of something. But generally it’s a good time to re-examine why you’re keeping items.

The more you pare down what you have, the more you can use your shed for other purposes besides just as a storage space.

Add additional storage

Putting a peg board on the wall can help you find an easily accessible place for all the loose items you use regularly.

Adding extra shelving can help keep your bins and sports equipment organized. And, baskets or hooks attached to the walls can store lawn or gardening equipment.

For those random, smaller items, look at things around the house you can repurpose to use as storage bins, like coffee tins or old jars.

As you place things in their new home, be sure to label them so it’s clear for everyone to read. Labeling will help next year’s spring cleaning go a lot quicker.

After your shed is ready for warmer weather, you can start on other areas of your home. But, don’t be the person who stays inside cleaning or decluttering on a beautiful day.
