15 Creative Uses for Portable Sheds

Think you have no use for a portable shed? You may be surprised!

These buildings serve a variety of purposes. Most people only see sheds as storage units.  Though they’re great for holding excess items and eliminating clutter, they can offer even more value to your busy life.

Plus, whatever your storage needs are today, may not be what you need tomorrow. That’s OK if you’ve chosen a Cook shed. Read more about how to transition your shed as your family enters different stages of life.

Here are 15 creative uses for portable sheds:

   Home Office

WFH (work from home) has become a lot more common recently. Having an office in a separate building removes some of the distractions present when everyone is trying to get work (or play) done at home. It also helps you maintain that work-life balance you had when you used to go into an actual office building. Now you have complete control of your work environment. Make this a great place to think, be creative and stay focused throughout the day.

If you’re wanting a home office, we recommend taking a look at our Utility Shed or one of our Cabin styles.

Here are the first steps to get you started on your office shed!

Tool Shed

A tool shed can be a wonderful place to neatly store and organize all of your various tools. Use tie organizers or plastic shoe organizers to give you easy access to your most used tools.

Take a look at the inside of Rich’s shed. He’s built shelving between the studs and added a pegboard to one portion of the wall for hanging tools.  It looks beautiful on the outside and is a practical workspace on the inside.

Or, take a look inside Jimmy’s shed (below) where he’s built custom shelving and a workbench. The important thing is to build a space that will fit your work needs. Think about how you work and the best flow for all of your tools and equipment. If you’re building a workshop, then we recommend a Handyman, Utility Shed or Tool Shed

  Garden Shed

A portable shed near your garden can be used to store gardening materials and vegetables that you’ve recently harvested. It’s also provides you with ample space for potting plants, storing gardening tools, dirt and more.

Try adding a magnetic strip to your wall for hanging small metal items. Or add tall shelving to efficiently use your vertical space. Want more tips? Keep reading!

Start with our Garden Shed option, but you might also look at customizing out Utility Shed or Lofted Barn.

Local Food Pantry

We had the privilege of helping one of our communities find the right Cabin style shed that they could turn into a local food pantry that was within walking distance of many families in need. They took a 12×32 Premium Lofted Cabin and worked with a contractor to finish out the inside of the shed, complete with electricity and a handicap ramp. They took their blank canvas and created something the community really needed. Read more about their transformation here

Man Cave or She ShedOr Both

Occasionally, couples just need some time apart in order to fully appreciate one another.  But, for some couples it may be better to share your shed space. (It’s actually one of our Pro-Husband tips!)

The important thing is that both of you have space where you can relax or release your creativity. That may mean you get the spare bedroom and he gets a man cave or vice versa. Or, maybe you get a Handyman shed so you can split the space up between the two of you. Below is how one Florida mom took her Utility shed to the next level. She occasionally lets her boys join her for a movie night.

Pet House

Pets are often seen as family members, so don’t hesitate to give them the best. Sheds make excellent shelter for outdoor animals when they’re climate controlled and well ventilated. Here are a few tips on pet proofing your shed.

Home Gym

Put all of your exercise equipment in a portable building to create your own personal gym! Make it your space, with the right equipment and messages to keep you motivated all year long.

Pool House

Place a shed next to your swimming pool or hot tub. After swimming, kids and adults alike can use this room to change out of their wet clothes and into dry ones. Parents will love the lack of indoor puddles commonly tracked in by children! Plus, it becomes a great place to keep all of those pool cleaning supplies, toys, floats, etc. when they’re not being used or kept safe during winter.
